Social Networking is one of new media’s biggest accomplishments. They connect the world together through a mere app or website. Many people can connect with others across the otherside of the world because social networking has made that possible. Today we have many ways to network, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Emails, etc. This gives many the opportunity to be connected to the world. They are able to see the world change within seconds. If a new issues arises, people simply have to login and they will be the first ones to see the headlines. It gives many opportunities to keep up with friends, politics, issues and such. In the article, Brave New World of Digital Intimacy, it states Zuckerberg “developed something he called News Feed, a built-in service that would actively broadcast changes in a user’s page to every one of his or her friends. Students would no longer need to spend their time zipping around to examine each friend’s page, checking to see if there was any new information.” Through news feeds, no one is ever out of the loop. Social networks, such as Facebook makes sure that people are immediately receiving information with a press of an app. No one is no longer kept in the dark about their friend’s engagements, new policies, weather reports, Trump nonsense or environmental issues through the help of news feeds. Everyone is in the constant “know.”


Not only does social networking help with staying aware, but also for corporate issues like finding a job. With LinkedIn and Indeed, no one has to struggle to find a job. There is no longer a need to go from door to door with a resume in hand because these apps send them electronically to a job someone is interested in. It is a simpler process to discover new opportunities and network with others through social networking. By having the ability to connect with others, it is easier to land opportunities many once dreamed of. With a simple message on LinkedIn or Facebook, it can help individuals network to find their careers.


The dark side to social networking is many people are more vulnerable to online predators. In the article, Antisocial Networking, it states, “the social repercussions has centered on the darker side of online interactions, like cyber-bullying or texting sexually explicit messages.” Children are now glued to their phone, so it’s makes them more accessible to cyberbullying. Since children spend most time communicating through social networking, it becomes an easy outlet for them. But it not always be used for the best reasons. Some network pages, begin to target some kids, which affect them emotionally and hurt their growth. Children are networking and connecting more, but they are starting miss out on face to face interactions.


Another darkside can be relinquishing privacy. The government can have full access to what you are seeing on your screens and what many are saying. Regardless of that, many social networks are public. For example, Twitter. Anything someone tweets can be seen by many eyes. In order to indulge in social networking, many do not know that privacy rights are being taken away from them.

Social Networking is constantly evolving. It has already taken up a huge part in today’s society. Many people spend hours of their day scrolling through apps. In the future, it’s practically impossible to know what new apps we’ll have and how we will be using them. We will definitely have more elaborate and innovative social networking. Everyone will be prone to more online predators and less privacy soon.
