Creativity

New Media gave many the opportunity to foster their creativity. It allows everyone to be expressive and doesn’t restrict users as much. It allows users to create videos and content to share amongst each others, for example, “mash-ups.” These are created by editing music over animated characters. In the article, Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?, it states, In 2007, an artist, Soulja Boy, came out with a song, “Crank that (Soulja Boy).” Many users then began to dub the song over Disney characters dancing. This may seem like copy infringement because the videos used in these mashups are being taken from companies like Disney and Nickelodeon, which they don’t seem to mind. Nickelodeon states, “‘Our audiences can creatively mash video from our content as much and as often as they like.”’ With the help of large companies, social networking, and editing softwares, the creator of the mashup was able to express their creativity. This shows how new media allows users to be free. The companies aren’t going out of their way to shut their creativity down and YouTube allows them to post the videos, so they can be shared and viewed by millions. New media helped foster the creation of “mash-ups” and many more.
